Glider

In Northeast Region, CAP, all glider operations are centralized under the command of the NER Glider Program, but the equipment and activities are decentralized to serve members of all the wings in NER.

Glider Activity Sites

There are five glider "activity sites" selected around the region. Currently, only two glider activity sites are active to conduct glider "O" flights and other glider flight activity:

  • Solberg Airport (N51) in Readington, NJ;
  • Hartness State Airport (VSF) in Springfield, VT.

Procedures

Cadet Glider Orientation Flights

The wing glider project officer identifies cadets that need glider orientation flights. This list will include the cadet's name, CAP ID number, unit of assignment, syllabus number of remaining glider orientation flights, and date of last ride. The wing glider project officer coordinates availability of space at the closest activity site with the activity site coordinator and then coordinates relocating the cadets to the site at the appointed times. The wing is responsible for transporting the cadets to a Glider activity site and for any associated billeting and food costs.

Cadet/Senior Flight Instruction / Proficiency Flights / Form 5 Evaluations

Cadet and senior member glider flight instruction is allowed. Cadet/senior flight instruction is available by Individual Flight Instruction coordinated through your wing project officer and/or the Activity Site Coordinators. Cadet flight training is also available at one of NER's four one-week summer Glider Academies.

Payment for Training Flights: The pilot must pay by check for the flight in accordance with the published NER Aircraft Flying Hour Rates. If a commercial tow is used the pilot will be expected to pay for the tow directly with the tow operator and not the NER.
